Think! It's what you drink!
Learn how you can make a difference in Calgary's
water quality. Yellow Fish Road volunteers paint "yellow
fish" symbols next to storm drains (the grates next to
the curb) and distribute fish-shaped brochures to nearby
households, to remind people that anything that
enters the storm drain system goes directly into the
river. In Calgary, storm drains connect to the river
untreated. Anything (like litter, salt, soap and
fertilizer) that runs off lawns, driveways,
sidewalks and roads can end up in the river. These
wastes can have a negative impact on the aquatic
ecosystem - not only by harming fish and wildlife, but
reducing drinking water quality for humans.
How Can You Help?
Join the Yellow Fish Road™ program as a volunteer to
help educate and inform members of your community. You
can call Trout Unlimited's project co-ordinator at (403)
221-8360.
Dumping chemicals into the storm or waste-water
drainage systems or placing them in the garbage can
pollute the environment and is against the law. You can
help protect our water by disposing of unwanted
household chemicals in one of three ways:
- You can take them any day of the week between
8 am and 5 pm to one of the depots
at designated fire stations.
- You can deposit your unwanted house hold chemicals
at one of the City sanitary landfills. Ask the
scaleman to direct you to the drop-off location.
- You can take unwanted household chemicals to any
residential fire station as part of our Household
Chemical Cleanup Program.
If you have any questions about the disposal of
unwanted household chemicals, please call The City of
Calgary Operations Centre at 3-1-1.
If you see someone pouring substances into a storm
drain, report the incident to The City of Calgary
Operations Centre at 3-1-1. You can also call the
Alberta Environment's Environment Response Centre at
1-800-909-6040.
Your family, community group or class can get
involved! In Calgary, you can borrow complete
paint kits from Trout Unlimited Canada. Visit the Yellow Fish Road™ website from more
information.
