So this will be our 2nd adventure. If you zoom in you can see the yellow
hilite marks of the trail to the glacier wall. |
Now we could start our trek in canoes, but we're packing in pretty light,
so we'll go on foot. |
As you can see the trails is well maintained here. You can still see the
grand Chateau Lake Louise behind us. |
Twice as far from the chateau and spirits are picking up. |
This is where Asian tourist's in high heals bow out. |
Tyler experiences Juniper berries. |
Smells like Gin??? |
They got weird mushrooms here too... |
Do you know what hearing the soft trickling of water down a stream does to
a guy? |
Back in 5. |
It's been way longer than 5!!! |
Put an enlargement of this up in an art gallery - Modern Art guys. Check
out the textures. |
How (not) to feed a Steller's
Jay. Start with quality nuts, no salt. |
Whistle a jay call to get him to fly over to your treat. |
He's told us he prefers pecans, so fish out some of those. |
Yup, the pecans are the best. |
He confirmed we had more nuts, so he's off the tell his family. |
Maybe if I hold a perching finger out and do the jay call, he'll come? |
Forget it buddy, ya gotta at least have some nuts. |
|
|
|
|
|
Entering the land of the giants. |
Look how tall the locals are here. |
A vertical panorama shot. |
Tyler gingerly climbs on top of the sleeping giant's foot. |
Hey Skylar, I'm on top of his foot. |
Get up here, you got to try this. |
The giant feels something ticklish and flicks his foot. Skylar's tossed
aside and lands on a piece of stone pie. |
Tyler scampers to hide under the other foot. |
Hmmm, what if he stands up? |

Checking out bird nests in the Giant's rock face. |
Leaving the land of Giants |

|
|
|
You definitely need to watch you step on the trail now. |
Look Mom, No sling. |
The last melt-off from the end glacier. |
Putting some elevation between us and the lake. |
Bouldering training made easy with these stacked slabs. |
Mist is getting heavy now. Trail shows water running down it. |
Gotta keep the Fro dry. |
The glacier draws nearer. |
What do you think, are those eyes peering out at us? |
The 360 view - video |
The clouds push on us as we continue to ascend. |
Panoramic view of the ridge the trail takes us on. |
The mists lighten up. An opportunity to refuel. |
A providence of the mist, you don't overheat during the ascent. |
Time to speculation on what's to come... |
Mists have started rivulets of water, easily captured into your canteens. |
Water bottle toss - video |
The persistence of the mist makes for some soft green moss. |
Our band finally reaches the tea house. |
This
is a majorly off the grid place. Cash is the currency, and tea pretty much
the menu. Sugar would have been nice, but again, not on the menu. Sun sets
and they shut down. No lights. |

|
The
parting of the fellowship |
Skylar
stays behind, watching our packs. Tyler and Karl embark for the glacier
wall. |
|
|
Sprinting in the beginning to make up time, we arrive on the open scree
slopes of the glacier |
Looking over the edge of the wall carved by tonnes of ancient ice |
Testing one's footing on the edge of a one-way descent. |
What looks like a rock bottom is only a thin covering with ice fissures
gapping open. |
The trail is now just the precipice, dropping off from either side of you. |
Could really use that squirrel suit to fly around these peaks. |
Tyler at the end of that yellow dot trail he showed at the start of this
trek. |
The view of the chateau. barley a dot. |
Time to return before we loose daylight. |
Just need to explore a scramble partially down onto the glacier floor
before we leave. Karl descends first, Tyler follows. |
The attempt is to descend about a third of the way down and peer over a
pressed up wall of scree. |
Almost on the ledge now with a good view of the hidden glacier. |
Looking across the shoulder and seeing small pyramids at the end of
waterfalls. |
Tyler spy's a curious purple and green rock with writing. |
Mia. Well Mia, I'll help toss your rock just a bit close to the glacier
floor. |
Here you go Mia - Video |
and there she rolls. Down there with the green glacier water pools. |
Trying to throw a rock that far, not happening. Distance is elusive up
here. |
Time to scramble back up. 3 steps up, 2 back down. |
Just to let you know there's a sheer drop right where I'm laying. Kind of
like the Head
Smashed in Buffalo Jump. The edge just blends in. |
Alright, enough gazing at waterfalls and green-blue glacier pools. |
Time the connect back with Skylar |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Fellowship re-united, lets head home. |
Nice trail stones here. Full slab, slopes in slightly. Good work. |
Team supported bouldering - video |
That's a steep drop-off. |
Not the merging of the waters!!! Is Tyler trapped? |
Super powers when you need them. |
Impressive. |
Strange how the 2 waters transform each other. |
Tyler now finds himself on a road less traveled. |
One last jump... |
Walking out where the glacier meets the lake. |
All the colors come alive |
Maybe this is a clam, glacier clams should be good eating right? |
Karl's view from the high road. |
Nothing like sharing the highlights of the adventure on that last stretch
home. |
and having that memory to shared together always |
and having done it with your bother. |
and just so you know, that's where we were. |
Good night Tyler... |
Good night Skylar. |
|

PS: Late night mountain sized burgers go great after a hike and a nap. |
